We all know Japan as one of the most powerful nations located in South East Asia who had the courage to stand against the mighty USSR, but we hardly knew that this small country has a lot of potential when it comes to tourism. Though, Japan does not make many attempts to attract world travelers to its famous cities like Kyoto and Tokyo there are many travelers across the world who are very much interested in learning more about Japanese art, culture and their day to day lifestyle which makes them one of the unique personalities on planet Earth.

When it comes to tourism in Tokyo there are more Japanese people from other parts of the Japan than international visitors. Hence, in other words, Tokyo earns a lot of tourism income through domestic tourism rather than international tourism. There are more than 400 million people from other parts of Japan who come to checkout Tokyo every year and compare to this there are only 4 million international tourists who prefer to checkout Tokyo. One of the main reasons for this is the rising cost of the city. Tokyo is undoubtedly the number one city when it comes to cost of living. Another reason could be that most of the banners and information around Tokyo is written in Japanese scripture which makes it very difficult for the international tourists to communicate or ask any questions regarding the destination or any other food items.

However, Tokyo is packed with a lot of destinations that you can visit. If you love the sea food that you should take a walk to Tsukiji Fish Market which is considered to be one of the best and busiest fish market in Japan. The city of Tokyo is divided into wards and therefore the best way to travel Tokyo is to checkout the places ward-wise because that would really cut the confusion out of the equation and you will be able to travel different places. Tokyo has a very seasonal weather which means that the seasons here are very much on time and therefore in winters the temperatures drop to around 10 degrees Celsius wherelse in summer it shoots up to 30 degree Celsius.

If you are in Tokyo than you should definitely checkout places like Disney Resort and Dome City. Both these places attract a lot of local and international tourists because of their popularity. The Disney Resort is the technologically advanced romantic garden where you can spend some quality time with your friends and family. There are a lot of local restaurants and cafes around here where you can halt and enjoy Japanese cuisine along with other international food items. Hanayashiki Amusement Park is also one of the popular destinations where you can enjoy some of the best roller coasters and large Ferris wheel. If you want to checkout some of the older buildings than make sure you visit the Imperial Palace which was once the residence of the Emperor of Japan for more than a century.

When on holiday, we all like to soak up a bit of the local culture, and there is no better way to do this than to sample the local food and drink that the place that we are staying has to offer. When staying in Son Bou villas, there are some delicious foods and drinks that will give you an insight into the culture and taste buds of those from Menorca.

What Sets The Food In Menorca Apart From The Rest?

Menorca is very rich in terms of agriculture, so vegetables are deliciously fresh, and the fact that the island is surrounded by seawater which is clean and fresh means that the seafood that is found here is also superb. With every town in Menorca boasting its own cheese making industry, you will also find that the restaurants around Son Bou Villas have cheese that will make your mouth water.

Seafood

Being an island, it is not surprising that seafood is usually top of the menu when it comes to local delights and, if you’re a seafood lover, Menorca will definitely not disappoint. With fresh, locally caught seafood including mussels, mullet, prawns, squid, sardines, lobster, sea-bass and sole, you can take your pick as to what you fancy. By far the most popular seafood dish on the island is one which goes way back in time and was once made by local fishermen on their boats – the Caldereta de Lagosta, a lobster stew. This can be found in most of the restaurants on the island, so you are sure to find it within a few minutes of Son Bou Villas, and you can taste the dish that Menorca is famed for.

You can be sure to find a selection of local cuisine a short drive from Son Bou Villas.

Vegetables

Stuffed aubergines are a delicious food that you can sample when staying in Son Bou Villas. Aubergines have their insides scooped out and are stuffed with rice, tomatoes and spices, and sometimes even meat. There are also other dishes that the Menorcan’s use aubergines in and they are very skilled at making meals with these great-tasting vegetables.

Meat

Menorcan sausages are not like the ones that you’ll find in supermarkets at home! Made from 99% meat, there are many different types of local sausage to try out when you are staying at Son Bou Villas. Alternatively, you may prefer a leg or shoulder of lamb, which you can find in most of the restaurants on the island and which is absolutely delicious.

Desserts

Desserts are very popular in Menorca, and arguably the most popular of these is almond macaroons, or carquinyols. Different pastries are in abundance on the island, and Ensaimada is one which is preferred by many of the locals who enjoy it for breakfast. During your stay in Son Bou Villas, you should do this as well; as they say, when in Rome…

Drinks

The locally made gin, Xoriguer, is popular on the island and you are sure to be able to find it when staying in Son Bou Villas. Different to the gin you will find in most countries, it should be drunk with lemonade, locally made liquor, or neat – or even with tonic!

Thinking of taking a gap year? That doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a young and wet behind the ears student. Wildlife conservation holidays are popular with nature-lovers of all ages, from school leavers, to professionals taking a sabbatical, to retirees who want an adventure. We take a look at the various generations making their way out to the Game Reserves of Africa for their gap years.

The Young ‘Uns

Many people leave school unsure as to what their next move should be. They may know that they want to go to university but have deferred entry in order to take a well-earned break from studying. Or, they may not be planning to go to uni at all, but simply need a break in which they can figure out what they want to do. Whatever the reason behind it, many school leavers need a break before stepping out into the big wide world, and a gap year works as the perfect bridge between college and the next step. This tends to be a period of zero responsibility which can be a little unnerving following the strict timetable of lessons, so for many a wildlife conservation holiday, where they can have an adventure whilst giving something back and learning, is the ideal solution.

The Young Professional

Once we leave school or university and join in the professional rat race, we can spend years rushing headlong into our careers, with little time for much else. Working long hours, and taking the bare minimum in holidays, it is not surprising that eventually people can burn out. Then comes the sabbatical; there are many people who work for a number of years in a profession building up their experience, before deciding that they want to take some time out. You’ll find many of this generation on wildlife conservation holidays. Trips can be anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, providing enough time not just to escape from the rigmarole of working life, but to recharge the batteries and reassess what is important to you.

The Carriage Clock Crew

Retirement might seem like the most inviting prospect you can imagine whilst you’re still at work, and it is very enjoyable for the first few months as you feel the tensions of working life slipping away. However for many, it is not long before boredom sets in. You could take up golf, join a gym, or even create your own mini version of paradise in your garden, but it may not be enough to keep you stimulated. Wildlife conservation holidays will not only be a fantastic holiday for you, but will keep you fit both in body and mind. With no limits on your time, you can spend as many weeks as you please at the Game Reserve, and on your return you will no longer feel restless, but you’ll be rewarded with a sense of fulfilment and some wonderful memories.

So whether you’re a young and fresh faced student looking for a way to fill a few months before you start studying again, a professional looking to pause your career and take a break, or a retiree who doesn’t feel like resting; you are never the wrong age for a gap year. With opportunities to learn new skills and see some amazing sights, wildlife conservation holidays make the perfect gap year for every generation.

Mark Bottell is the General Manager for Worldwide Experience, an online tour operator offering extended breaks on wildlife conservation holidays and various adventurous gap years for adults.

It’s easy to see why the waterfront in Cape Town has become South Africa’s leading attraction for tourists. With so much to do here, you can spend hours on end in this colourful and vibrant atmosphere, if not days! With glorious sea and mountain views, not only can you experience everything that this great place has to offer, but you can still feel as though you are in the heart of Africa.

Something For Everyone

Located in the working harbour in Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront is home to a huge range of shops, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and excellent hotels, all sitting alongside fabulous luxury apartments and trendy office buildings. No matter whether you are looking to pick up some souvenirs, or enjoy a delicious meal or a relaxed drink, you can do so here and you can do it in style. Not only this, but the waterfront craft market and the Two Oceans Aquarium offer some magnificent days out that will allow you to enjoy some wonderful experiences you are unlikely to forget in a hurry.

The Ultimate Dining Experience

Of course, eating out is one of the most enjoyable parts of any holiday and the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town offers something for every palate. Whether it is a family meal or a romantic dinner ‘a deux’ that you are looking for, you will find a huge range of restaurants catering in everything from the very best of the local cuisine to dishes from all around the world.

Fish – But Not For The Platter!

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a very popular place to while away a few hours in Cape Town, and attracts a lot of tourists who come to see the marine life. With over three thousand sea creatures, the aquarium is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in learning about the marine life of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. You will not only see a wide variety of fish here, but sharks, penguins and turtles too, making this a wonderful experience for the whole family.

The Cape Town Seals

Seeing marine life doesn’t just end at the aquarium, however, because you can sometimes see seals at the Waterfront itself. This is a great sight that many people love, since they can experience these creatures up close and in a natural way. Find yourself a cosy bar or restaurant right down by the water and instead of people-watching, try a spot of seal-watching in Cape Town instead!

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Shopping is something that you won’t be able to resist when you visit the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, with a wide range of shops to choose from, many of which offer fantastic value. This is great if you are looking for souvenirs for yourself or your family and friends back home, or you could simply browse around and see if anything takes your fancy. With leather goods, jewellery, antiques and a whole host of local crafts on offer, there is something for everybody when it comes to shopping at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

When the moon glitters on the first snow of winter, a bewitching young woman is said to walk the Hex River Valley tragically searching for her lost love. Some say Eliza is South Africa’s most famous witch, whilst others know her as the daughter of a lowly farmhand who became mentally ill after causing her only love to fall to his death:

Eliza was a beautiful young woman whose stunning looks ensured that she had numerous suitors. However, she was also a spoilt and self-centred girl, and when she fell in love with Frans she was determined that he worked hard for her affections. In order to marry her he must pick her a red disa in the kloofs of the Matroosberg; the highest peak in South Africa’s Hex Valley.

The red disa is a stunning bright red orchid, which is still spotted by lucky walkers in the Matroosberg. Spottings are rare though and the plant has a predilection for growing in inaccessible places, such as ravines and steep mossy gorges. To pick a disa is near impossible without mountaineering equipment, and Frans, unprepared for the task, slipped and fell with a brilliant red disa in his hand.

On hearing that her young lover had died, Eliza was beside herself and became mentally unstable. Her parents kept her locked her in her bedroom and if you had visited the old farmstead a couple of years ago, before it was demolished, you would have spotted “Eliza 1868″ scratched into the old windowsill.

One night, wearing just a nightgown, Eliza broke out of her prison and wandered to the foothills of the mountains, where Frans had walked previously. There she sat and sobbed, but the outcrop crumbled beneath her and she also fell to her death. Some say that her ghost wanders the Matroosberg on moonlit lights, crying and wringing her hands. In Afrikaans, they call her the Heks van Hex Rivier, or the witch of the Hex River.

Witches and disas may be one reason to visit the Hex River Valley, but there is a far better one

1. Pleasant Year Round Weather

With comfortable winters and breezy summers the Terra Vista area offers ad ideal setting for enjoying all your favorite outdoor sports and activities. Here, you’ll find a range of temperatures that allows you to comfortably enjoy the Florida experience season after season. In addition to its balanced temperatures, Citrus County offers historically low hurricane risks compared to other coastal locations statewide.

2. Attractive Cost of Living

When compared to many Florida destinations, particularly in the southern parts of the state, Citrus County offers an escape from excessive costs. As highlighted in comparative price index reports, Citrus County ranks among the most affordable places in Florida to live. Here, you’ll enjoy a high-quality lifestyle where lower costs are prevalent, not only in everyday purchases such as dining out and entertainment, but also for major expenses including housing. Plus, there’s the added savings of no state income tax and benefits of today’s Homestead Exemption laws and the long-term real estate tax stability they provide.

3. Balanced Location

From its vantage point north of Tampa Bay in the heart of the Nature Coast, Citrus County offers uncluttered beauty accentuated by towering oaks, pristine spring-fed rivers and the rolling hills that founded the area’s unique “Alps of Florida” reputation. This is uniquely balanced by the wealth of cultural, fine dining, shopping, and urban pursuits found just a short drive away in metropolitan Tampa Bay, Orlando, Ocala, and Gainesville.

4. Outstanding Outdoor Recreation

Aptly referred to as Mother Nature’s Theme Park, Citrus County has 22 miles of lakes, 7 rivers and a Gulf of Mexico coastline. Enhanced by our beautiful weather, residents enjoy world-class golfing and fishing; diving and snorkeling; boating and kayaking; and the many hiking, biking, and horseback riding opportunities provided in the area’s many parks and preserves, including the sprawling Withlacoochee State Forest.

5. Not Crowded

Citrus County offers an escape from the crowds increasingly found in many parts of Florida, especially the Southeast and Southwest regions. Here, you’ll enjoy a more balanced pace of life without the stress caused by heavy traffic, long lines, and overcrowding.

6. Preserved & Ecologically Balanced

While south Florida grows more and more cluttered, Citrus County offers a pristine and picturesque lifestyle. Its home to the many state forests and preserves, some of the most productive saltwater estuaries in Florida, as well as seven of the state’s outstanding crystal-clear waterways. And this natural, untouched beauty will remain unspoiled because the County has protected about 50 percent of its land from future development. While much of Florida suffers from near critical water shortages, we’re in the enviable position of having an ongoing supply of high-quality water from the largest collection of major magnitude springs of any county in the state.

7. Amenity-Rich Suburb

Citrus County offers the full range of amenities your active lifestyle demands. From nearby shopping and diverse restaurant choices to local theatre productions and area festivals, you’ll find Terra Vista is an exciting, convenient place to enjoy great suburban Florida living.

8. Excellent Health Care

Offering a wide range of outstanding health care options right near home brings peace of mind. Living in Citrus Hills, you’ll have convenient access to two hospitals, hundreds of highly regarded family and specialty physicians and dozens of outpatient surgery and diagnostic centers. And just a short drive away awaits the world-class health care services at Shands Health Care in Gainesville.

9. Low Crime

Of the 67 counties in Florida, Citrus County boasts one of the lowest crime rates. In keeping with our great suburban setting, residents enjoy a lifestyle free from the threats and worries often experienced in more populated parts of the state. Plus, our Sheriff’s Department has earned national accolades and accreditation for its unwavering pursuit of safety and diligent crime-prevention efforts.

10. Educational Opportunities

With a long-standing tradition for excellence, Citrus County offers a comprehensive array of educational opportunities to meet the needs of our diverse population, ranging from educational enrichment courses for retirees to outstanding pre-schools. Our public schools boast one of the lowest student-teacher ratios in the state, and there are several private school options. Our community college and technical school offer local higher educational opportunities at very affordable rates.

11. Poised for Florida’s Future

Citrus County lies in a unique position along the coastal edge of Florida’s Central Belt, a region where the real focus of future growth lies. In terms of bustling hubs of commerce, Citrus County is advantageously located just a short distance from the flourishing metro centers of Orlando, Gainesville and Tampa Bay. Located even closer, is the blossoming city of Ocala.

12. Amazing Quality of Life

Set amidst gently rolling hills in the heart of Florida’s Nature Coast, this northern suburb of Tampa Bay offers all the amenities you desire to live life to its fullest. Balanced year-round weather, idyllic natural beauty, great schools, advanced medical care and superb golf, tennis, boating, and fishing all combine with a rare spirit of community to create an enchanting place few places can rival.

Hello my fellow flight attendants. It’s been a while, but I’ve been busy doing what we all love and had to take some time off from writing (ok, you caught me, I’ve also had a bit of writers block). However, I found the best cure to writers block in an airline-related site is to get back on the line. Inspiration is EVERYWHERE when working. As I spent my first day on a jet, it struck me like a brick. I dealt with a multitude of passengers (some happy and some angry). So I decided to dedicate this one to those unhappy people by giving them some incite from a flight attendant point of view.

-Our craziest points of flight are boarding and preparing the cabin for landing. When you board, we have about a million things we need to do to get that door closed and make it possible to get the plane in the air. Unless you’re sitting in First or Business Class, where most airlines have a dedicated FA for taking care of them, we don’t have time have time for specific requests. Your requests for a glass of water, soda, etc only serve to distract us and reduce our chances of getting you in the air and getting you to your destination on time. We’re only asking you for a minimal amount of patience on this one. Once we’re in the air, we’re at your complete disposal. I don’t think a few minutes of patience is too much to ask. During the landing process, we only have a small window to get the cabin ready to land. If all pieces don’t fall into place, the plane is forbidden to land by FAA standards. So don’t ask for beverages during that time and forget about using the lav. We can’t land the jet until all passengers are securely in your seats. I’ve been on planes going into O’Hare where one passenger decided to get up to use the lav during “sterile” and we had to abort the landing. We lost our place in line and it took another 45 minutes in the air before getting approval to land. Many passengers missed their connections due to that one passenger.

-You’re not the only passenger on that jet. You may feel the temperature is too warm or too cold, but we won’t contact the flight deck on the request of one single passenger. It usually takes the complaints of several passengers in your section before we will take any action.

-During flight, STAY AWAY FROM THE COCKPIT DOOR!!!!!!! Post 9-11, our first objection is to protect the flight deck at all costs. If you make any attempt to go near it during flight, it makes us nervous and makes red flags go up.

-During take-off and landing, TURN OFF YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES All OF THEM. FAA requires that ALL electronic devices are turned off. It won’t kill you to do without them for 20 minutes (10 during take-off and 10 during landing). FAA states all must be turned off, so we must enforce that rule.

-Flight Attendants have more power than you realize. If you choose to start fights with us, YOU WILL NOT WIN. There is an array of laws put forward that favor flight crews. We don’t want to use them, but will if the circumstances call for it. The results will be you getting kicked off the plane while on the ground before take-off or being escorted off the jet by the police after landing.

-If you’re starting your trip at an out-station (that’s an airport that flies into a HUB), show up early. You may think that the airplane will wait for you, but it won’t. You should arrive at that airport 2 hours before boarding and at the gate 30 minutes before boarding. If you’re late at a HUB, we understand because things beyond everyone’s control can happen. If you’re late at an out-station, the fault is clearly your own and 50 to 120 people shouldn’t be penalized for your poor planning.

-During delays, the flight crew doesn’t have the power to call and demand your connecting jet be forced to wait for you to arrive. No airline will delay a flight of 250 people to wait for 1 person. Don’t waste your breath asking.

-Many airlines allow us to close the doors 10 minutes early, so if everyone shows up a bit early, we can depart 10 minutes early.

-When boarding, put one bag under your seat, one in the overhead, and then sit down so others can do the same. It’s that simple.

-Because of 9-11 rules, the pilots can NEVER exit the flight deck in-flight to answer your specific questions about a delay or connection, so don’t bother making that ridiculous demand.

-On board, we will go out of our way to accommodate a friendly passenger. Conversely, we will also go out of our way to avoid and ignore a rude and insulting passenger.

-All passengers are ranked by the airline by how often they fly that airline. Frequent Flyers (even if not seated in Business or First) will always get more amenities than those who aren’t. We get a list upon boarding and know who is who on the jet.

-Those of you with young children. FAA forbids any passengers from entering the flight deck during flights. However if your child is well-behaved and you ask, the pilots will often still allow your child to visit the flight deck after we land and the cockpit door is opened. Between you and me, they still get a charge in introducing children to the world of aviation.

-Those of you tempted to put laptop computers in the seat pockets, DON’T. It’s not an FAA approved stowage area for your computer, and the pockets aren’t designed to support the weight of your computer. I’ve seen many computers destroyed when they slam to the floor.

-Did you know that many parents ignore the changing tables in the lav and change the diapers of their infants on the very tray tables you use on your flight? To answer your next question, the tables aren’t always scrubbed and sanitized between flights.

-The blankets are usually replaced between the flights, but the pillows aren’t. To avoid getting sick, it’s advised to avoid sleeping on the pillows and only using them for lumbar support during the flight. I recommend bringing your own blankets and pillows for your journey.

-Most airlines don’t provide snacks in coach anymore. It’s wise to being something to munch on during the flight.

I could go on, but I’m going to stop there. I’ll save more suggestions for a future article. I hope all passengers reading this will heed my advice. It will go a long way towards making their flight (and especially ours) much more pleasant.

Till Next Time, Fly Safe Everyone,

Ranthambore National Park is regarded as one amongst the largest and the most famous of Northern India’s national parks. It is located in Southeastern Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district. It is only 130 kilometers from Jaipur which houses the nearest airport.Sawai Madhoupur is the nearest town and it has the nearest railway station.

The new name of the park is Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary. It was also declared as a Project Tiger reserve. The facility became a national park Iin the year 1980.Adjacent forests became known as the Keladevi Sanctuary and the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary in the year 1984.In 1991, this tiger reserve grew and now has both mentioned sanctuaries.

The park is a popular wildlife sanctuary because of its tiger population. It has become one of India’s best tourist attractions with its deciduous forests belonging to Central India’s once magnificent jungles.Even during the day time, you’ll be able to spot tigers. The best time to visit the park is through the months of November to May.

Set by a plateau’s edge, the park is bounded to the south by the river Chambal and to the north by the river Banas.Aside from the two, there are many lakes within the park. Its name was derived from the Ranthambhore forest that still stands inside the park premises.

Ranthambore National Park spans through 392 square kilometers.Aside from its large tiger population, many other wild animals roam freely through the park. This includes leopards, tigers, wild boars, hyenas, sloth bears and the chital among others. There are also various reptiles, birds, plants and trees throughout the city.

As the park becomes very popular to tourists, the population of neighbor villages also increased. This led to the increasing incidence of poaching and fatal human-tiger interactions.Back in 1982, 44 tigers were recorded in the park.As of 2005, only 26 tigers were seen. However, in 2008, the number seemed to increase to 34.There were even 14 reported tiger cubs, all due to efforts made by locals and forest officials to control poaching.Just to stay off the park, villagers were given incentives.Aside from that, surveillance cameras were also fitted throughout the reserve.

Ranthambore National Park Major Attractions

The popularity of the Ranthambore National Park isn’t only confined in the animals and plants you’ll find here. There area various other major attractions tourists adore inside the park. Here are some of them:

Ranthambore Fort – This is a 10th century majestic fort.It towers over the whole park area. Its height is 700 ft.over the surrounding plain.Within the fort are 3 red Karauli “stone temples” built during the 12th to the 13th centuries which are devoted to Ramlalaji and Ganesh Shiva.

Tigers – This Park has one amongst the country’s best national parks in spotting a tiger. These majestic predators are often spotted basking or ambling under the sun.

Padam Talao – This is regarded as the largest among all the lakes situated within the park.It features the magnificent red sandstone Jogi Mahal along its very edge.Close to it is an enormous Banyan tree which ranks as the 2nd largest in India.

Auckland is the biggest metropolitan area within the country of New Zealand. This metropolitan area has more than one million inhabitants. The second one is Manukau which is located at the outer east and south portion of Auckland. The next district is called Waitakere which is lies on the western part of Auckland while the last district is the North Shore, located on the north section of the Auckland Harbor Bridge and the Waitemata Harbor.

I recently visited the wonderful island of Sri Lanka, and found a country full of surprises.

Sri Lanka is situated just south of India, in the Indian Ocean. Once known as the Dominium of Ceylon and often referred to as the tea country, tea plantations abundantly thrive across the island, with spice gardens, banana and coconut palms growing randomly to create a jungle of natural resources.

People, animals and transport seem to co-exist side by side with no animosity towards each other. Dogs wonder aimlessly across or bask in the sun at the side of roads, cows and goats roam around everywhere, even on the beaches (which I found rather amusing) and people are everywhere, whether walking, cycling, using a tuc-tuc, motorbike with 5 astride, in a taxi, bus, car or truck, each takes up a space of the not too wide road. But co-exist they do, there is no anger at being stuck behind a truck, merely a short hooting of the horn to say I am here and would like to pass, politeness abounds and the expression and sounds are all of friendliness, within a country that sorely needs help at redeveloping itself since the tsunami. People are poor and yet happiness is everywhere…. Not just for the child on the hip or the person at their side, but for expats and tourists as well.

Tourists fluctuate towards the resorts and some chance the areas slightly outside of these areas, to experience a quieter less harassed holiday. Small pockets of expats can be found, dotted all over the country. When you bump into these people and chat about life on the island, there is not much to complain about. Yes, sometimes the water gets turned off or the electricity, yes the internet is not as fast as they would like it to be. Isn’t that how most people feel in developed countries anyway: The faster it gets the faster we want it. In this little piece of paradise, expats are not too concerned that it takes a little longer to do things here, the people are prepared to wait, not too hasty to move forward too quickly. There was a lot of talk and concern about the elections and safety within the country and there are still road blockades and police / army personnel with guns wandering around keeping peace if necessary. However, with 70% of the population being Buddhists, the lifestyle is peaceful and life simplistic.

From an expat perspective, I could not fault the lifestyle. As said above, yes there are definite things missing, things are slower, it takes a good 4 – 6 hours to get from Colombo to Galle and similarly to anywhere about 200km’s apart. I cannot say that the roads are particularly in good condition, but in the 10 days that I visited, I did not see one accident. Hardships could include the lack of being able to get from one part of the island to another quickly, the lack of fast internet connection, perhaps the human waste / refuse, which allows for the influx of flies, the dirt which is left to lie around and lastly the lack of funds to rebuild the country to what it was before the Tsunami.

Having said that, I have to look at all the good things that you find there, the beauty of the natural resources, how the nationals and expats are trying to rebuild the country, the beaches, game parks and mountains. This is truly a beautiful part of the world.

Expat Cost of living summary

The currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee LKR

The Exchange rate as at 15 January 2010 was $1 = 114.217 Rupees

I am going to break the Cost of living down according to some of the Xpatualtor basket items :

Alcohol and Tobacco : Alcohol at Bar, Beer, Cigarettes, Locally Produced Spirit, Whiskey, Wine

Cigarettes (20s)- $3.14 – $9

Domestic Beer(500ml)- $2.50

Imported Beer (330ml)- $5.80

Wine at a bar- $6 a glass

Wine at a shop- $15 (750ml bottle)

Hotels tend to increase the prices of alcohol as it is the one way that they can make a profit. There are many small hotels and restaurants which create a competitive edge to where you can stay.

Clothing : Business Suits, Casual Clothing, Children’s Clothing and footwear, Coats and hats, Evening Wear, Shoe Repairs, Underwear

Casual Long Sleeved Shirt (Men)- $12

Casual Long Sleeved Trousers (Men)- $20

Shorts (Men)- $11

T-Shirt (Men)- $6

Casual Blouse (Women)- $7

Casual Skirt (Women)- $12

Children’s Jeans (Boys)- $5

Children’s Jeans (Girls)- $3.50

Children’s Shirt(Boys)- $5

Children’s Shirt(Girls)- $4

Clothes are extremely cheap, in Colombo a person can get most of the name branded clothing at fairly reasonable prices in Factory shops.

Communication : Home Telephone Rental and Call Charges, Internet Connection and service provider fees, Mobile / Cellular Phone Contract and Calls

Monthly phone rental- $4.36

Phone call rate- $0.05 for a local call

Internet line connection fee- $104 (buy all equipment with installation)

Internet service provider fee- $17 (1 geg free thereafter)

Monthly mobile contract fee- $2.18 (for the year)

Mobile / cellular call rate- 90% of phones are prepaid,

Mobile Phone 100 Minutes Call- $38

- $0.012 – $0.05 sms peak times

Due to so many of the nationals working overseas to send money home, the communication costs are extremely low and there are often special deals or no cost is involved in the actual call.

Education : Cr

Galveston Island has beaches just about from end to end, over 30 miles of sand, sea, and fun. But each area has some unique aspects and several areas are designed for different activities. There are some standard rules for all beach area.

These rules below apply to all beach areas and are designed to keep everyone safe and prevent any problems.

No overnight camping – No open fires

No glass containers – No alcohol except East Beach

Pets must be on leashes – No walking on dunes

No four wheelers – No diving into water

Galveston has a Beach Patrol that enforces these rules and they are visible everywhere on the beaches. Other good rules to follow are not to swim within 100 feet of jetties or piers and never swim in the ship channel. Some areas do have lifeguards but many don’t. Never underestimate the power of the surf, even a small 2-foot wave can cause you problems and this is especially true for young children.

Since Galveston is an island, the beaches stretch from end to end, the line up of beaches from east to west is as follows:

East Beach – Also called R.A. Apffel Park

East Beach is the largest beach in Texas and is located on the far eastern side of the island. If you drive east on Seawall Blvd until it ends, then take a right on Boddeker Road and follow it to the end (less than a mile) you will be at East Beach. East Beach is unique since you can buy alcohol and drinking is allowed. There are also chairs and umbrellas to rent, bathrooms and showers, snacks and drinks, souvenirs, and an outside bar. There are volleyball tournaments and events all summer long. It’s loud, rowdy, and definitely for the party crowd. It’s open from 9:00 am till 5:00 pm on weekdays and till 7:00 pm on weekends during the summer season. Admission is $8 per car.

Steward Beach

Stewart Beach is located at Seawall Blvd and 6th Street. Stewart offers all that East Beach does except alcohol and also has a children’s playground. It’s much more laid back and family oriented. Same cost, $8 per car, and same operating hours. They do have Community Rooms for rent for company parties, family events, wedding receptions, and etc. You can call 409-797-5182 for more information on rentals and availability.

Seawall Beaches – 16th Street to 61st Street

There is public access from all along the Seawall Blvd and free parking is available. There are no facilities, bathrooms, showers, or anything. Just miles of open beach that many people like to walk along or sunbathe. Great for a quick stop to look at the ocean and waves. There are steps every often for access from the street level down to the beach.

The area directly west of the city offers three smaller beach areas that are open daily from March to Labor Day and on the weekends in September.

Sea Gull Shores Beach Pocket #1

This is located at the 71/2 mile Road along FM 3005 (Seawall Blvd turns into FM 3005). This area was still being worked on from the ravages of Hurricane Ike and may or may not be fully open until April. So there may be facilities like a pavilion, restrooms, and parking when it does open again. But check before entering.

Sand Castle Beach Pocket Park #2

Sand Castle Beach is located at the 9 mile Road along FM 3005 (Frank Carmona Pocket Park 2) and includes a public beach pavilion, an educational wetlands preserve, beach access points, and public & private parking.

Sea Shell Beach Pocket Park #3

Sea Shell Beach is located just west of the 13 mile Road along FM 3005, offers 10 acres of beaches, a beach pavilion, showers, a snack bar, beach chair rentals, picnic tables, and wheelchair accessibility.

Galveston State Park

Right after Pirate’s Beach subdivision and 13 Mile Road is Galveston State Park. The park was created in 1975 and has over 2,000 acres of space. Entrance Fee is $5 per day, per persons 13 and older and camping is available. A maximum of 8 people and 14 days per campsite (out of 28 day period) and there are RV hookups also. Besides admission there are $15 to $25 campsite fees depending on the facilities. The State Park is open 7 days a week all year.

Far West End Beaches

After the Galveston State Park there are numerous free beach areas that are clearly marked with blue signs that have Beach Access written in white letters. All of these areas are public but have no facilities or lifeguards.

Well, there you go. There is something for just about every kind of beach lover. The busiest times on all the beach areas are May through September. But some of the best times to go are when the crowds aren’t around in early spring or late fall. And the weather is often mild all through he winter months too.

A lot of us dream of going on vacation but that one thing stops us all the time – money. Money seems to get in the way of a lot of things and keep us from living our dream life. Although it is good to be practical and not spend more than you make, it is also good to find good deals and try to find a cheaper alternative for everything.

If you’d like to go on vacation allow yourself! Just consider a few of these tips to find a vacation that is affordable that way you don’t have to feel guilty about spending an arm and a leg.

Travel websites: First of all, the best place to start searching for this cheap vacation is through travel websites online. There are several sites like Hotels.com, Expedia, Hotwire, Kayak and many more that you should check out. Personally, my favorite is Kayak. They group up a ton of websites and find the best deal from all the websites.

Travel Zoo: Travel Zoo is another site to consider. This has some of the hottest deals as the time for places all over the world. It updates every Wednesday and gives you only the best deals. Check out their website and see what they have to offer.

Travel agent: If you don’t like using the Internet more than you have to or you feel clueless when you do, try using a travel agent. They are excellent at finding you the best deals and are around for a reason. You may have to pay for their services, but if they can save you all that money it may be worth it in the long run. Although, I only recommend this if you don’t know how to use the computer well or find good deals online.

Last minute: If you take a trip last minute you will most likely get the best deal possible. Hotels get desperate for people to stay the night that they will offer very cheap rates so that they can at least get some kind of business. Also, vacation packages are also great to check out last minute. In fact, on Travel Zoo’s website you can find the best last minute deals!

Days: The days that you plan on taking a vacation are going to affect the price very much. If you go on the weekend like everyone does you can sometimes end up paying double. Yet, if you go during the week when everyone is working you will most likely get cheaper rates. This goes for flights, hotels and packages. So, try arranging the dates that you’re going to see how the price instantly changes.

Finding a good deal on a vacation isn’t hard to do at all! There are so many websites out there designed to help you out that it’s hard not to find a good deal. Just consider some of these tips, sites, times and days and you just may find the price for the vacation you’re looking for.

Find Cheap Vacations as well as more of my work at FindAirlineCards.com.

The V&A Waterfront might be fast becoming one of the biggest reasons why people are taking holidays to Cape Town, but that’s no excuse for not experiencing all of the stunning scenery that this superb place is so well known for. With so much to take in, and sights that will take your breath away, the area around Cape Town is a wonderful place to explore if you are looking for somewhere that has serene landscapes and is blessed with a stunning natural beauty.

Enjoy Nature From The Horizontal

One of the best ways to experience the natural side of this beautiful place is also one of the simplest. With so many gorgeous white sandy beaches and lovely bays with stupendous backdrops of mountains and beautiful scenery just beckoning you, you could simply lie on them all day in the sunshine. Alternatively, paddling in the tidal pools is not only a great way to cool off, it also provides the opportunity to take in the magnificent views around you.

Tortoises, Baboons And Whales, Oh My!

If you’re looking for more active ways of experiencing nature, then the Cape Point Nature Reserve may be more interesting to you. Still relaxing, and with so much to offer, you could spend all day strolling along the numerous walking trails and taking in every sight. Home to around 250 species of birds and four different species of tortoise, as well as baboons, ostriches and antelope, the reserve is a nature lover’s dream. As you look out across the ocean, keep your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins too, as you can see a number of varieties of each; or see how many of the area’s more than 1,000 species of plant you can spot. With such a huge variety of fauna and flora to cast your eye over, you will feel as though you have stepped into paradise as the natural beauty of Cape Town takes your breath away.

Cocktails On Table Mountain Anyone?

If you want to enjoy the panoramic views from above the city of Cape Town itself, then this can be achieved by standing atop Table Mountain. The easiest way to get here is by taking the cable car, and once you reach the top there are facilities which include a self-service restaurant and even a cocktail bar. You can spend as much time as you like taking in the awe-inspiring views. Table Mountain is a powerful place to visit that many people regard as being the best attraction of Cape Town, and the view from the top is definitely something that should be experienced.

Penguins – in South Africa?

Boulders Beach, about 20 minutes drive from the centre of Cape Town offers quite an unexpected treat; African penguins in their natural habitat. These adorable creatures have made the beach their home, where they not only mate and feed, but can also be seen to bask in the sunshine. Although you cannot get too close there are wooden walkways which let you get a birds’ eye view.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden – An All Year Round Treat

If botany happens to be your thing, then the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden could be the perfect place for you to visit. This is an attraction which is great to visit all year round since, in the summer months, everything is at its most vibrant and the atmosphere of all of the visitors makes it very exciting; whereas between December and March you can enjoy a much more placid experience by taking in the concerts on the lawns as the sun sets. The gardens offer an amazing experience that is not to be missed, and a visit here is a great way to truly appreciate nature during your trip to Cape Town.

With its beautiful backdrops, fascinating culture and tumultuous history, it’s no surprise that South Africa has been the setting for several successful movies. The combination of mountains and movie stars is undoubtedly a recipe for success as the popularity of these films has demonstrated.

Invictus

The most recent film to be made about South Africa, Invictus merges the story of Nelson Mandela’s opening year in office with the progress of the national rugby team in their bid to win the 1995 World Cup. The film documents Mandela’s attempts to use the success of the sports team to unite a country that has suffered from a rift for many years. Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon this was sure to be a box office hit for 2010. The World Cup final takes place in Cape Town, and during the build up the viewer is privy to some phenomenal shots of Table Mountain and the surrounding landscapes. Nominated for two Oscars and a Golden Globe, this film perfectly encapsulates South Africa’s history and tells the story of one its most famous leaders.

Blood Diamond

In Blood Diamond, you will see a slightly different side of South Africa and parts of this film are certainly not for the faint-hearted. However, it relays an important message about the way in which many of the diamonds worn by westerners have been acquired. The movie is set in a number of locations, depicting small local villages, the city of Cape Town, and the forests and mountains surrounding the city. The lead role really gives Leonardo di Caprio the chance to test out a more rough and ready style of acting, though his South African accent can be questionable at times. Though this film is heart-wrenching in some places and somewhat violent in others, it raises awareness about the blood diamonds that are being exported out of the country even now.

District 9

Mingling everyday life in South Africa with the arrival of extra-terrestrials, this film focuses purely on fantasy. The film tells of the arrival of an enormous space ship over Cape Town, from which an entire race of aliens exit and set up home in slums on the outskirts of the city. In the course of the film, a government agent becomes exposed to the aliens’ biotechnology, and as he begins to slowly evolve into an extra-terrestrial being himself, he begins to understand the plight of the aliens and fight their corner. Less of a depiction of South Africa’s history or contemporary life, this film focuses purely on the futuristic sci-fi. However, as the camera pans out across the slums, the backdrop of Table Mountain never fails to impress. Nominated for 4 Oscars, District 9 is an interesting take on the South African lifestyle.

Boasting a wealth of interesting history, intriguing culture, and beautiful scenery, South Africa is not only an ideal topic for a film, but it is the perfect location for filming. Many box office bonanzas have been produced either on, or in, this fascinating location, and many more are yet to come.
