How to Have an Enjoyable Budget City Break in Prague

Travel

Why are you reading this? I don’t know. But whether you just want grea value for your hard earned money, or you really need to budget hard on your city break, you have come to the right place. This article will give you some very useful tips on how to enjoy a cheap city break in Prague.

First of all, dining and drinking. It will be very cheap for you to do this in Prague. The beer is delicious and when the bill arrives you are likely to not pay more than 2 or perhaps 3 euros if it’s a really fancy place. Burgers and pizza meals at middle-of-the market restaurants are not likely to cost you more than 5-6 euros. I am quoting the prices in euros, but of course, there are czech korunas you will pay with when you are in the Czech capital.

Transportation is also dirt cheap in Prague, the metro costs next to nothing. But word of advice, avoid the taxis, they are known to overcharge naive tourists and you really don’t need them either. Prague has a compact city centre, and the metro will take you all the places where you want to go.

When it comes to hotels, there’s another story with Prague. Compared to the cost of dining and transportation, hotels can be surprisingly expensive. The average 3-star hotel will come in at about 50-75 Euros. Many of the hotels will include a small European style breakfast buffet in the price of the room. Be cautious about hotels that claim they are close to the center. Always double check the location with Google maps before booking a room to ensure that your version of close and the hotels version of close are one in the same.

Coming to Prague on a budget most likely means you will be staying in a slightly ugly hostel. The number of backpackers coming through the city means there are plenty of options for travelers. Booking a bed in a group room will average between 15 and 20 Euros depending on the location and the size of the room. Many hostels also offer private rooms for less than the price of staying in a hotel. Oftentimes the hostels are even closer to the downtown area than the hotels.

The most expensive time of year for accommodation is the summer months between mid May and mid September. Shoulder season is generally from March-Mid May and again from mid-September until the end of October. The low season, which in turn means the cheapest rooms, runs from November until March, excepting Christmas and New Years, when prices are often higher than summer rates. As a rule of thumb, prices are highest between Easter and Halloween.

So, when all that accommodation stuff is sorted, what do you do next? Many museums are free, or very cheap, so dive into the world of culture. Word of caution though, avoid the erotic museum which is a major tourist trap.

If you are visiting in a weekend, be sure to watch a match of Czech footie, Sparta Prague is the big team in town.

I hope this info will come in handy when you visit Prague. It’s great city to spend some time in, enjoy your stay.

How to Enjoy a Cheap City Break in Zagreb

Travel

Zagreb is not known to be a very expensive destination. But, it is easy to part with large amounts of your travel budget if you are not wise and cynical when it comes to spending money. In this article I outline a few tips on how to get a cheap transport from the train station and airport, and how to get an inexpensive hotel-

When you travel on a budget you are likely to be interested in the prices and costs on your destination, and I would like to help you stretch your kunas so that you get plenty of value for your money.

So here you are, either arriving from the airport, or stepping outside of Glavni Kolodvor, the main train station of Zagreb. The main building of Glavni Kolodvor was built in 1892 and was designed by a Hungarian architect Feranc Pfaff who also designed the train stations in Bratislava, Slovakia and Rijeka, Croatia. Once you exit the station, there is a statue of King Tomislav who was the first king of Croatia. King Tomislav was crowned in 925 A.D and is considered to be one of the most important figures in Croatian history. Behind the statue there is a colourful and spacious garden which gave me a good impression when I arrived in this town. If you walk from the train station to the main square you pass by the Art Pavilion and park Zrinjevac (the official name is Nikola Subic Zrinski square). Yes, it’s immensly pretty, but we need somewhere to stash our baggage and a bed to sleep in, don’t we?

Luckily you are smack in the middle of the centre of Zagreb if you arrive by train. If you arrive by plane on the other hand, you should seek to take the Zagreb airport bus which will cost you 30 kunas (4 euros), if you decide on taxi on the other hand, you are looking to part with 150 kunas, or 20 euros. Be wise, be money-smart, choose the Zagreb Airport bus for God’s sake.

If you are planning to stay in a hotel during your visit to Zagreb, it might be wise to book in advance and stay within your budget. There are many hotels like Hotel Jarun that are out of the centre vicinity and will require you to take a tram into the city centre.

How much will a 3-star hotel cost?

A typical 3-star hotel will cost about 300 kunas (42 Euros) per night. So it is probably best to stay in a hostel. Hostels in the centre cost about 145 kunas(20 Euros) per night. Finding anything less than 20 Euros is highly unlikely and will probably be some shady hang out. So145 kunas is a bargain.

More expensive accommodation during summer

During the summer, accommodation is more expensive than in the spring or in autumn. During the months of March, April, October, and November accommodation at hostels is reasonable, usually between 140-145 kunas per night.

I hope these tips can help you enjoy a holiday in Zagreb without going broke. Make smart decisions and get value for your money in order to have a successful budget holiday in Croatia.
