Boating and Recreation on Canadian Waterways

Travel

If you are interested in some new places to go where you can enjoy boating, skiing or mountain climbing, you might want to consider going to Canada. Here you will find an assortment of breath taking terrain, fascinating wildlife, and plenty of water ways for your boating recreation. There are some new boating laws concerning pleasure craft that you might need to know.

Okanagan Valley is almost a desert because it is so dry, but there is plenty of water available to put a boat in and enjoy your leisure. This area is adored by thousands of people, both local and guest, with unequaled variety of climate and landscape, it is the perfect place for boating and sailing. But sure you have an operators card if your boat is motor powered.

One place to consider is Adams River where every four years sockeye salmon return to their place of birth by the millions. This event is world famous and can be enjoyed from several different areas around the river. There are many resorts and lodges available to accommodate travelers who need to soak up a little time indoors.

For those who do not have their own boat, there is Big Rideau Lake where you will find a boaters paradise. The waterway consists of lakes and rivers that are connected by canals. Whatever way you travel there, you can rent a boat, just remember that you will have to have a craft operator card for motorized boats.

With a fabulous array of 100,000 lakes, some of which are therapeutic, are found in Saskatchewan. This province is a great holiday and with a variety of lakes it is a dream for fishermen. While fishing here you might land an underwater monster, because Walleye salmon have been caught weighing over 18 pounds. That could surely make anyone feel like a sport.

On a clear day, Ontario beaches seem more like the Caribbean than Canada, with rafts and boats enjoying the same waters. Lake Erie is fed from the west by the Huron river and from the east by St. Clair. This a mecca of boating activity and a battleground of the War of 1812, if you are in Canadian waters you will need to comply with their boating laws and regulations.

The Great Lakes and the connecting channels form the largest fresh water system on earth. These lakes are clearly seen from the moon, and have interesting shapes, with one of them looking like a wolfs head. They are fed by numerous rivers, and if spread out evenly the water they contain could cover the United States in 9.5 feet of water.

Alberta in the Canadian Rockies offers more than 600 lakes where jet boating is a favorite sport, and an excellent place to scuba dive. River boarding is a great new sport being enjoyed in Alberta, surfing the rapids is a favorite pastime of young and old. Should a little diversion be of interest to you, you can take a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer, with a tour that ends in Vancouver.

Taking the boat on Lake Ontario this weekend? Don’t get caught without an Ontario boat license. Take time today to sit a boat test. You can take the test online and have a PCOC License today.

Amelia Island – Southern Charm in Northern Florida

Travel

Tucked into the Florida coastline just as you pass the border in from Georgia you’ll find a great little spot for a nice, quiet, fun filled family vacation, it’s called Amelia Island. Amelia Island is the southernmost of the Sea Islands, which is a chain of barrier islands that stretches along the east coast from South Carolina to Florida. Because it is just inside the boarder from Georgia, Amelia Island still has some of that Southern charm, the streets are lined with oaks rather than palms and the businesses are more sedate meaning you’re more likely to find them advertised in wood block signs than neon. It’s a little more subtle than the rest of Florida; it’s very quaint and peaceful.

Amelia Island is a lush beautiful island; it’s rather small at just 13 miles long and about 4 miles wide. It has two towns Fernandina Beach and Amelia City, two state parks Fort Clinch and Amelia Island State Park and two main beaches Summer Beach and American Beach. The island is very rich in history. Fernandina Beach is known as the “Isle of 8 Flags” because it’s the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags. American Beach is historic because during segregation and the Jim Crow era when African Americans weren’t allowed to swim at the Jacksonville beaches this is where they’d come it was the largest and most popular beach of it’s kind in the area.

Summer Beach is at the south end of Fernandina Beach and this is a seriously ritzy place, it’s an upscale resort development consisting of private homes, condos and the Ritz-Carlton Resort, like I said it’s fancy. This is where you’ll find some great golf courses, spectacular hotels and quaint bed and breakfast Inns with beautiful private beaches. Although access to these beaches is limited, there are some other public beaches on Amelia Island and you can even drive on some of them. If you ever get a chance to drive on the beach I highly recommend it. There’s nothing like driving along with sound of the waves and the birds and the smell of the ocean it’s a wonderful experience.

After you explore the fort you can go relax on one of over 3 miles of beaches or go hiking along a six mile self-guided nature trail. We chose to go and fish from their 1/2 mile long pier. I caught a sheepshead and a redfish but I had to throw the red back, it was too small. My friend asked if I wanted to spend the night there, they have to full facility camping grounds, but I’m not a roughing it sort of person so I opted out. The camping grounds were beautiful though, one was along the Amelia River and the other was on the Atlantic Ocean side.

As we were leaving Amelia Island, headed off the northern side, we passed a pedestrian-only fishing bridge across Nassau Sound. I asked my friend about it and was told that this was the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier. It’s a mile long and is a popular local fishing spot; people catch jacks, drum, whiting and even the occasional tarpons, I made a mental note to stop there when I visit again.

After we left I couldn’t help but reflect on the day and think to myself “What a great little place”, tucked quietly into the coastline of Florida. Packed with History, loads of outdoor fun and great places to stay, what more could one ask for?

If you’re looking for great places to vacation in Florida this summer, make your travel plans today. Try Amelia Island, you’ll find it’s just what you and your family are looking for.

It’s All About the Water at Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Destin, Florida – A Great Little Fishing Town With Beaches Your Family Will Love

Travel

Destin has been a longtime favorite of fishermen, in fact it started as a humble fishing village and today is touted as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” they also claim to have the largest, best equipped fishing fleet in Florida docked in Destin Harbor, which is great because we love fresh caught seafood.

Off shore fishing is excellent with close access to Gulf of Mexico via the 100 Fathom Curve which is closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida, making it the fastest way to get to the deeper waters in the Gulf where the best fish are. You can charter a boat and go after a big Blue Marlin, this is the best place in Florida to catch them, Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Wahoo and Sailfish are also caught during late spring and summer.

If you like to fish in shore you can catch Cobia and Kingfish; bottom fishing is also good, grouper and snapper are commonly caught. You don’t even necessarily need a charter a big boat to fish in shore or bottom either, fish can be caught from small boats and even kayaks launched from the beach. Choctawhatchee Bay is another great place to fish in the area; trout, redfish and black drum are commonly caught in the Bay. Even if you don’t like to fish the bay is beautiful and a great place to spend the day on the water but be sure to bring your sunscreen the last thing you’ll want to take home is a nasty sunburn.

The East Pass, which is also called Destin Pass, has the only outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. The west side of Destin Pass is accessible to the public; they have a great beach there which is beautiful and remote if you want to get away from the crowd.

Destin is a popular vacation spot and a big resort town with beautiful hotels and resorts that the whole family will enjoy. They have also have places you can rent by the week, which is what we did, with many places right on the ocean. About 4.5 million people visit the area every year and we were happy to be two of them. They have family amusement parks with go-carts, miniature golf, thrill rides, and even bungee jumping. We also saw at least a dozen well manicured golf courses and just as many tennis courts.

If you like to shop they have these great little outdoor malls that are cleverly disguised as quaint wood framed buildings that hold all the latest designer brands and labels; it reminded me of being in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

One of the things we liked best about Destin was the food. The dining in Destin is as diverse as it is delicious; restaurants here range from jacket and tie fine dining overlooking the Bay to flip-flops and cut offs oyster bars overlooking the Gulf. Most, we were delight to find, have live entertainment; everything from classical pianos playing to local bands to jukeboxes. Seafood is the natural choice, because it’s not uncommon to see restaurant marquees inviting you to come in and enjoy the fresh catch from the night before, but they have a little bit of everything including Caribbean style.

So next time you’re in the Panhandle be sure to get over to Destin, it’s a great little seaside town where you can fish, surf, parasail, golf or shop. You can spend the day on the beach then spend the night out having some family fun and most of all enjoy the seafood.

If you’re looking for a summer vacation try out Destin, Florida. With beautiful white sand and clear blue-green waters, it’s one of our best Florida beaches and one of the top tourist destinations in the Southeast.
