South Beach Miami is Popular With the Euro Crowd

Travel

I just love South Beach in Miami. Some people think of it as the international playground for the rich, famous and beautiful people but not me; I live in Florida so I know the ‘real’ South Beach and trust me you find all kinds there.

I have a friend I met while in college recently come back for a visit. He’s French and is used to international type beaches, shops, cafes and clubs and often brags that there isn’t anything like them anywhere else in the world so while he was here I set out to change his mind.

The first place I took him was, of course, to Lummus Beach. It couldn’t have been more perfect if I had planned it, which I hadn’t. They where doing a photo shoot for some fashion magazine right there on the beach, my friend was impressed. As we walked along we saw people playing volleyball, building sand castles and wading.

After we finished our walk on the beach we went to a hotel in the Art Deco area, these hotels are dotted all along Ocean Ave. in South Beach and are really great to just walk on the other side of the street and look at. Some of the most recognized ones are the Colony and the Clevelander. South Beach has the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world.

After we went back and got clean up from our day at the beach we headed back to Ocean Ave. for a early dinner at one of the many sidewalk cafes there. If you get there early or in the off season you can get some great deals for dinner and even happy hour drinks. The food in South Beach is world class, many of the chefs’ train abroad and then bring their culinary skills home to us. As you’d imagine there’s a strong Cuban influence as seen is dishes such as paella and all their wonderful pork and chicken dishes – yum. My friend was impressed with his dinner and I was pleased, after all he’s been to some of the best restaurants in France no less; this guy knows a good meal when he gets one and he did.

After we ate I took him to a place called Mango’s Tropical Cafe. This place is WILD. When you walk in the first thing you’ll notice is that the whole place is painted with bright florescent paint, then you’ll see this huge bar jutting out from the middle with dancers on it. Did a mention the dancers, and wait staff for that matter, are very scantily clad? I wasn’t able to drag my friend out of there so we could go clubbing until around midnight but that’s ok most of the clubs in South Beach don’t close until 4 a.m.

They have a whole section of town, mainly Washington Ave., that has several upscale clubs. One of the most well known is the Mansion, they have special guest DJ’s on occasion as well as musical guests. B.E.D. (Beverage, Entertainment and Dining) and Cameo are a couple more, B.E.D. New York was even featured on an episode of Sex and the City; all these clubs are located on Washington Ave. My friend and I dragged our butts in at about 2 a.m., which was relatively early by SoBe standards, because we still had one more day together and I had to take him shopping.

So as I was driving my friend to the airport we were discussing all we had seen and done and he agreed, finally, that South Beach was pretty international after all. I tried to tell him that but I’m glad he chose to come and see for himself, we really did have a blast.

If you’re looking for a vacation getaway with an international flavor where you don’t need a passport, try South Beach Miami in Florida. While you’re there you’ll want to check out Lummus Beach, one of Florida’s best beaches and a favorite with European travelers.

It’s All About the Water at Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Travel

Just before you get to Pensacola traveling west in the Florida Panhandle you come to a great little town called Fort Walton Beach. If you

Destin, Florida – A Great Little Fishing Town With Beaches Your Family Will Love

Travel

Destin has been a longtime favorite of fishermen, in fact it started as a humble fishing village and today is touted as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” they also claim to have the largest, best equipped fishing fleet in Florida docked in Destin Harbor, which is great because we love fresh caught seafood.

Off shore fishing is excellent with close access to Gulf of Mexico via the 100 Fathom Curve which is closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida, making it the fastest way to get to the deeper waters in the Gulf where the best fish are. You can charter a boat and go after a big Blue Marlin, this is the best place in Florida to catch them, Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Wahoo and Sailfish are also caught during late spring and summer.

If you like to fish in shore you can catch Cobia and Kingfish; bottom fishing is also good, grouper and snapper are commonly caught. You don’t even necessarily need a charter a big boat to fish in shore or bottom either, fish can be caught from small boats and even kayaks launched from the beach. Choctawhatchee Bay is another great place to fish in the area; trout, redfish and black drum are commonly caught in the Bay. Even if you don’t like to fish the bay is beautiful and a great place to spend the day on the water but be sure to bring your sunscreen the last thing you’ll want to take home is a nasty sunburn.

The East Pass, which is also called Destin Pass, has the only outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. The west side of Destin Pass is accessible to the public; they have a great beach there which is beautiful and remote if you want to get away from the crowd.

Destin is a popular vacation spot and a big resort town with beautiful hotels and resorts that the whole family will enjoy. They have also have places you can rent by the week, which is what we did, with many places right on the ocean. About 4.5 million people visit the area every year and we were happy to be two of them. They have family amusement parks with go-carts, miniature golf, thrill rides, and even bungee jumping. We also saw at least a dozen well manicured golf courses and just as many tennis courts.

If you like to shop they have these great little outdoor malls that are cleverly disguised as quaint wood framed buildings that hold all the latest designer brands and labels; it reminded me of being in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

One of the things we liked best about Destin was the food. The dining in Destin is as diverse as it is delicious; restaurants here range from jacket and tie fine dining overlooking the Bay to flip-flops and cut offs oyster bars overlooking the Gulf. Most, we were delight to find, have live entertainment; everything from classical pianos playing to local bands to jukeboxes. Seafood is the natural choice, because it’s not uncommon to see restaurant marquees inviting you to come in and enjoy the fresh catch from the night before, but they have a little bit of everything including Caribbean style.

So next time you’re in the Panhandle be sure to get over to Destin, it’s a great little seaside town where you can fish, surf, parasail, golf or shop. You can spend the day on the beach then spend the night out having some family fun and most of all enjoy the seafood.

If you’re looking for a summer vacation try out Destin, Florida. With beautiful white sand and clear blue-green waters, it’s one of our best Florida beaches and one of the top tourist destinations in the Southeast.

Girlfriend Getaways: 4 Essentials For A Memorable Time

Travel

It’s the stuff that memories are made of – grabbing your friends, packing lightly and heading off for girlfriend getaways any chance you get. If you’re planning a girls weekend getaway any time soon, look no further than Florida’s Santa Rosa county.

Santa Rosa county lies between Destin and Pensacola and is ideally located along beautiful beaches and rivers. It also provides four absolute essentials for any girlfriend getaway:

ADVENTURE

More women are signing up for adventure package tours for their girlfriend getaways. Springtime in Santa Rosa county is the perfect season for canoeing in Blackwater River State Forest, also know as the Canoe Capital of Florida. You and your girlfriends can spend hours enjoying the tranquil beauty of the area’s rivers.

Or, head down to nearby Navarre Beach for a day of kayaking around the Gulf of Santa Rosa Sound, or to visit the sandbars along the Gulf Islands National seashore. If you prefer hiking or biking on your girlfriends getaway, the area offers some of the best nature trails in the state. Download a map to check out the trails and plot your routes before you arrive.

SHOPPING

For girlfriend getaways with a shopping theme, Santa Rosa and the surrounding area is sure to have something for everyone in your group. You can pick up the latest designer wear for a steal in nearby Destin and Fort Walton Beach at the country’s largest designer outlet malls with nearly 200 stores between them to choose from.

Flea market fanatics and antique hunters can browse the area’s largest flea market and antique stores in Gulf Breeze, Milton and Pace. There are also art galleries, specialty boutiques, and souvenir shops where you can pick up a little memento for yourself or your loved ones back home.

GREAT FOOD

When all that shopping and adventure seeking on your girlfriends getaway leaves you hungry and thirsty, drop in at one of Santa Rosa’s many restaurants to sample the local cuisine. You’ll discover the casual elegance of dining by the seaside, or bask in the hospitality at a local eatery.

Thanks to the Gulf Coast location, Santa Rosa visitors enjoy the freshest seafood year round. Seafood should be on the menu for your girlfriend getaways – there’s a wide variety to choose from, and it’s light, yet filling and delicious fare.

However, you can also order up a juicy steak at top-of-the-line steakhouses, or enjoy delicious Mexican, Chinese or Italian cuisine at restaurants along the Beaches to Rivers of Santa Rosa.

VARIETY

Choice is an essential element of the best girlfriend getaways. Depending on when you come to Santa Rosa, you and your girlfriends can enjoy seasonal attractions and events.

Fall is full of arts and cultural festivals and shows, and also features the Beaches to Woodlands tour, which is a self-guided tour that can take you along Navarre’s white beaches, through Blackwater River State Forest, and into historic Milton and the farmlands near Jay. If you’re planning a golfing girlfriend getaway, fall is also the best season to hit the greens.

In winter, girlfriend getaways can be filled with visits to indoor attractions such as the Butterfly House, museums, and pottery stores. And summer is the perfect season to cool off at one of Santa Rosa’s pristine beaches, such as Navarre Beach with its clear, emerald waters. For the more sporting in your girlfriends getaway group, sign up for a water sport such as skiing, deep-sea fishing, parasailing or waverunning.
