Majorca Family Holidays on Two Wheels

Travel

The beautiful island of Majorca is visited by thousands of families each year, some of whom want nothing more than to enjoy relaxing on the beach, strolling around the local towns and villages and indulging in a spot of holiday shopping. When it comes to more active families, however, there is a wonderful alternative in Majorca. Family holidays for those who enjoy cycling are becoming more and more popular on the island, which not only offers stunning scenery, but also a variety of terrains for beginner and more experienced cyclists.

Get the Whole Family Involved

If you have young children or active elderly relatives who enjoy cycling but aren’t quite up to strenuous excursions, then going up and down hills all day may not be ideal. Majorca family holidays on two wheels, however, are perfect for getting the whole family involved as the island offers plenty of flat terrain. Whether you are looking to cycle near the coastline and take in the spectacular sea views as you go adventuring on your bike, or prefer travelling around the small villages which offer a glimpse into the truly Spanish culture and way of life, there is something for everybody when you cycle in Majorca. Since most of the roads are virtually traffic-free, you will also feel very safe when cycling on this island paradise.

Things to See On your Travels

Cycling around Majorca, you will come across secluded beaches and gorgeous little villages everywhere, but there are also plenty of places which can be reached by bicycle that you may want to set out for specifically during your visit. The Monastery of Bonany, described as one of Majorca’s best-kept secrets and located above the town of Petra just south-east of the centre of the island is a fascinating place to explore. There is a climb however towards the end of the journey so this may not be suitable for all of the family. When visiting Majorca, family holidays are also not complete without visiting the bustling city of Palma. If you choose to cycle there, you will pass through some stunning neighbourhoods surrounding the city and, when you arrive, you will be rewarded by some of the best restaurants, shops and bars on the island. No matter whether you want to explore the delightful countryside or the island’s towns and villages, you will find something of interest around every bend and corner, and of course the friendly locals are always on hand to point you in the direction of interesting and fun places for you to explore.

Go That Little Bit Higher – and Leave Mother-in-Law Behind!

If you’re looking for some truly breathtaking views, and to see the plant and animal life of the island at its most glorious best, (as well as to escape from mother-in-law for the day) then trips up the hills and into the mountains of Majorca are ideal. With a variety of terrains to challenge those muscles, the Soller Valley offers a superb on and off-road experience on a single track along the coast, while Sa Comuna in Bunyola will take you through the pine forests and up to a height of over 800 metres above sea level. With routes which are ideal for sheer enjoyment or for training, the cycling experience will allow visitors to see a completely different side of Majorca. Family holidays spent cycling in the mountains and on the island’s many cycle paths offer the very best in terms of spectacular views, so just remember to take your camera with you!

Theme and Amusement Parks in Majorca – Family Holidays For Thrill-Seekers

Travel

When you’re on holiday, you want to find activities that the whole family can take part in and enjoy thoroughly, and theme and amusement parks of course offer fun and excitement for those of all ages. With something to suit a whole range of tastes in Majorca, family holidays which take in the island’s theme parks, zoos and aquariums can be an absolute blast and will certainly keep the little ones entertained.

Looking for Something Wet And Wild?

If there is one thing that Majorca is not short of, it is water parks, and in the heat of summer what better way to cool off and enjoy the thrill of the rides? Western Park, located close to and directly west of Palma, offers one of the best experiences on the island for water-loving thrill seekers. The Kamikaze water slide, which plunges from a height of over 30 metres, is sure to take your breath away, but if you prefer to experience your thrills ‘en famille’, the 260 metre-long Mega slide lets the whole family jump in a raft together. These and a whole range of other water slides are not the only attraction of Western Park, however, as it is also based on a Wild West theme. With Wild West shows offering the chance to watch everything from ‘shoot-outs’ to singing, and the spectacular Wheel of Death and Western Divers shows, a day simply isn’t long enough to take in all the great attractions. Aqualand Magaluf is another of the island’s water parks and this, along with the Hidropark in Alcudia, offers hours of fun and entertainment for children and adults alike during their stay in Majorca. Family holidays just won’t be complete without taking in at least one of these wet and wild attractions.

From the Wild West to Wild Animals!

Whether monkeys or piranhas are your thing, you’ll be able to find these and many more exciting animals at the variety of wildlife parks, zoos and aquariums in Majorca. Family holidays with small children certainly won’t leave you scratching your head for ideas and the Mallorca Aquarium, located in Porto Cristo and covering an area of over 2,000 square metres over two floors, on its own offers one hundred and fifteen displays of species from all over the world. Marine Land in Calvia meanwhile, will have youngsters captivated by the spectacular dolphin and sea lion shows and you can even watch the dolphins frolicking underwater from the underwater tunnel. If a safari is more up your street, then the Auto Safari Zoo on the outskirts of Sa Coma should be ideal. Whether you choose to go by car or to hop on the zoo’s mini train, you can experience the thrill of seeing everything from giraffes and elephants to zebras, lions, tigers and a whole host of other big cats – oh, and windscreen wiper-eating monkeys too of course!

Bring Out the Competitive Spirit in a Round or Two of Mini Golf!

The fantastic thing about mini-golf is the fact that the whole family can join in and have fun. Located at Palma Nova and set in a tropical parkland with waterfalls, caves and lakes, Golf Fantasia offers no less than three 18-hole mini golf courses and the opportunity to spend a full and fun-packed day in Majorca. Family holidays in the area certainly shouldn’t miss out on this wonderful attraction; but Dads, just make sure that you let the kids win every now and again!

3 Must See Sights in Palma

Travel

The beautiful Spanish Balearic Island of Majorca has long been a favourite with families on their annual holidays. Not only does the island have a wonderfully temperate, year-round climate, it also has a fantastic infrastructure in place for tourism. Majorca family holidays can be all things to all people: relaxing and rejuvenating or exciting and action-packed. But most of all, a holiday to Majorca will be family-friendly and fun.

Palma, the Balearic’s capital, is Majorca’s busiest port and close to half the island’s population calls it home. It is popular as a holiday destination with the Spanish as well as tourists on their Majorca family holidays. Here in the bustling port city one can experience diverse facets of authentic Spanish life, and there is something to keep everyone happy no matter what they are looking for from their visit; even Spain’s royal family return time and again for their holidays.

Castillo de Bellver

One of the most picturesque local attractions is the beautifully preserved Castillo de Bellver. The castle sits elegantly on a hill where it has presided over Palma for almost 700 years. Surrounded by a moat, and on two levels, the castle has the honour of being the only completely circular castle in Spain. Originally built as a royal summer residence, it was reincarnated as a prison for several centuries and there are still remnants of the prisoner’s ancient graffiti which adorns the walls. With children in tow in Majorca, family holidays are the ideal time to expose them to some culture, and the history and intriguing architecture of this fascinating castle will appeal to even the youngsters.

Gothic Cathedral

Even from the sea, the most prominent and striking building in Palma is the exquisite Gothic Cathedral. One cannot help but be impressed, not only by the size of the building, but by the intricate craftsmanship which makes up what surely must be the most elegant silhouette on Majorca. Family holidays to the city would not be complete without a visit to the cathedral and a stroll around its stunning interior. The kids will love exploring the pillars, arches and secret alcoves, and the parents will love the twisted tales of a construction which spanned a period of four centuries.

Banys Arabs (Arab Baths)

Even if you just visit Palma on a day trip on your Majorca family holidays, you should definitely include the Arab Baths on your agenda. One of the city’s more secret attractions, the baths date bath to the 10th century and are all that is left of the ancient Arab city, Medina Mayurqa. The half dome of the ‘tepedarium’ has 25 shafts down which sunlight pours, illuminating the baths. The dome is supported by a dozen columns and upon close inspection it becomes clear that each is unique. It is thought that, in an early example of recycling, the columns were originally part of various Roman buildings. The tranquil surrounds are a wonderful place to escape the busy city, and the children will love the enclosed courtyard which is filled with cactus, palms and orange trees.
