5 Exceptionally Odd Illinois Attractions

Travel

Our quest to seek out America’s most bizarre attractions continues to the Mid Western state of Illinois. While the typical Illinois vacation would have you taking in a Cubs game, dining on Chicago deep dish and journeying to the top of the Willis (Sears) Tower, we’ll have you experiencing everything but. So buckle up, put on your best Chicago accent, and journey with us to five of Illinois strangest attractions:

1. Funeral Home Mini Golf: Palatine, Illinois

When they’re not embalming a corpse or displaying the dead, you can bet the staff and patrons of the Palatine Funeral home will be in the basement playing a round of death themed mini golf. In fact, a free round of golf comes included with each funeral package.

The smell of formaldehyde fills the air, as you put your way through a challenging course filled with coffins, tombstones and other funeral themed memorabilia. Land your ball in the hole and watch it plummet 6 feet under.

2. World’s Heaviest Man’s Grave: Benville, Illinois

It’s only fitting that the final resting place of the world’s heaviest man, should be located but a stones throw away from the site of the world’s first McDonald’s Restaurant. While there’s no telling just how many Big Macs, apple pies and hot fudge sundaes Robert Earl Hughes consumed during his life, it’s safe to assume it helped him get where he is today.

Once weighing in at a hefty 1041 LBS, Hughes’ subterranean eat-nothing diet has reduced him to nothing but bones.

3. Live Otters In Bank: Kewanee, Illinois

At Kewanee’s Union Federal Savings and Loan, you can make a deposit, take out a loan, and pay a visit to Oscar and Andy, the bank’s dynamic otter duo (though Oscar Sadly passed away in 2008).

Housed in a giant pit at the centre of the bank, the otters have succeeded in re-inspiring investor confidence in the midst of the financial crisis. In fact, prices of fisheries stocks (the otters primary food source) have risen a staggering 64% since the arrival of the playful pair.

4. World’s Largest Bagel Parade: Matton, Illinois

Bring out the cream cheese, prepare your cutting knifes, warm up your toasters and get set for a carbohydrate rich parade that puts Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade to shame.

There’s no need for elaborate floats or fancy costumes here, no, the men and women happily dressed as poppy, sesame, onion and chocolate bagels are all you need.

Aside from the big name musicians and street performers who show up for their fill of dough, the event is highlighted by the appearance of the world’s largest bagel. To our disappointment however, the mammoth baked good was filled with thousands of bagel ruining raisins. Yuck!

5. Leaning Tower Of Niles: Niles, Illinois

Why bother with the trip to Italy, when you can experience Pisa (or at least a reasonable facsimile), just 15 minutes from Chicago O’Hare. And heck, authentic Italian cuisine doesn’t even come close to matching Chicago deep dish.

The 94 foot tower is about half the size of the Italian original, but with the right camera angle no one but da Vinci will be able to tell that it’s not the real thing (and he’s dead).

5 Exceptionally Odd Pennsylvania Attractions

Travel

Pennsylvania holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans. The declaration of independence was signed here, the Liberty Bell sounded here and frankly some of the nation’s best bizarre roadside attractions make their home here.

1. Drive-Thru Strip Club: Congruity, Pennsylvania

American’s love their cars and no where is that more evident than the spread of its drive thru culture. America’s got drive thru restaurants, drive thru banks, drive thru wedding chapels, heck they’ve even got drive thru trees. The next logical step in their drive thru evolution then, could be none other than the drive thru strip club.

For $10 a minute, you can pull your vehicle up to the diamond shaped peephole and watch the action unfold inside. For faster service, remember to have your payment ready at the window.

If you want to see things get really interesting, try ordering a private dance. And trust us, you don’t want fries with that.

2. Insane Fishpond: Linesville, Pennsylvania

Now you don’t have to be Jesus to walk across water. The volume of fish flapping about in this Pennsylvania spillway is so heavy; you could practically walk across their bobbing heads to the other side.

Some 400,000 tourists every year stop by to feed the fish modern marine miracle, dishing out some 2.4 lbs of bread each to the now carb addicted carp. In fact, the only Pennsylvania attraction that sees more visitors each year is the Liberty Bell.

While no human has yet to complete the fish head water crossing, the spillway has deservedly earned the nickname, “the place where the ducks walk on the fish”. And we say with a little balance, speed and Devine intervention you can make the crossing too. Hallelujah!

3. Big Mac Museum: North Huntington, Pennsylvania

Pay homage to the world’s favourite double burger, just miles from the site of its original birthplace. Gawk at the original Big Mac sauce gun, observe the evolution of the burgers packaging through history, and admire the colourful wallpaper adorned with the words of the legendary Big Mac mantra (Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun). It’s truly some of Ronald’s greatest work.

4. Mutter Museum: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Do grotesquely enlarged colons turn you on? Does the site of Grover Cleveland’s facial tumour get you hot? Do thoughts of John Wilkes Booth’s thorax drive you wild? Did you answer yes to any of the above? Then this place is just your fix.

The mutter museum features one of the world’s largest collections of medical monstrosities, ranging from twins joined at the liver, humans turned into soap and downright jaw dropping cases of testicular elephantitis. And here you are complaining about your headache.

5. Worlds Largest Hamburger Joint: Clearfield, Pennsylvania

Alas, we’ve finally found the answer to the question, where’s the beef? It’s right here at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in rural Pennsylvania; hundreds and hundreds of pounds of it.

Order up a quarter pounder here and the only thing you’re likely to get in return is a laugh. Here burgers are built by the pound, including patties weighing in at 1, 2, 9 and a heart stopping 11 pounds. Denny’s (not to be confused with “Denny’s”) gargantuan 15LB burger for two (more like for two dozen), includes some 4 Lbs of lettuce, tomatoes cheese onions and sauce. Quadruple bypass sold separately.

5 Exceptionally Odd Florida Attractions

Travel

Some rave of Florida’s pristine white sandy beaches, others its endless array of world class theme parks and still others its equally endless array of senior citizens. For us however, there’s one thing to rave about above them all; its spectacular selection of bizarre roadside attractions. Here are some of its best:

1. World’s Largest Shuffleboard Courts: St Petersburg, Florida

Grab your friend Ethel, give Gertrude a call, heck, clear out all of Florida’s old age homes and bring the gang here to the world’s largest shuffleboard courts. This may not be Florida’s oldest attraction, but it certainly attracts its oldest people.

The Shuffleboard courts here are so large in fact that your Aunt Bertha will have trouble making it to the other side without her angina acting up. Don’t let her leave home without her meds.

Once your aching back has had enough, head inside to the World Shuffleboard Hall Of Fame and pay your respects to Shuffleboard Legends Mae Hall and Lucy Perkins. Cooperstown has nothing on these guys.

2. Las Margaritas Grill: Homosassa Florida

Not since the American Revolution has Patriotism bled as strong as it does inside the doors of Las Margaritas Grill. On Friday and Saturday nights, patrons are handed American flags, and asked to take part in the singing of God Bless America, I’m Proud To Be An American, God Bless USA and the National Anthem. Those refusing to stand and sing (not to mention those who partake in flag burning) are promptly asked to hit the road.

Loyalists to the British crown, the French, Osama Bin Laden, we suggest you check yourselves at the door.

3. Mini Golf With Live Gators: Sarasota, Florida

Windmills, castles and clown noses no longer doing it for you on the mini-golf course? Try throwing a few live gators to the mix. The threat of losing your ball (or your hand) to pack of deadly 10 foot gators will have you putting with laser like precision.

After your round, you can even purchase a pile of raw meat to feed to the resident reptiles. Or alternatively, just jump in and feed them for no charge.

4. French Cafe Themed McDonalds: Orlando, Florida

Here a Big Mac becomes Le Big Mac, and mere French fries become Les French Fries. In fact, if not for the McDonald’s arch standing out front, you’d think you’d walked straight into a Parisian cafe.

Along with Le Big Mac and other classic McDonald’s favourites, you’ll also find such upscale fare as, blackened grouper, Portobello eggplant, Italian amaretto spumoni and of course, wine. We recommend the 1997 Ronald McDonald Red; a fine, fine year.

5. Boat n’ Trailer Racing: Bithlo. Florida

For those who have yet to achieve their NASCAR Dream, Boat n’ Trailer racing is their chance to prove their worth. Brave men and women hitch a boat to their vehicle, put the pedal down, and unleash a pile of carnage in their wake.

Should the above automotive violence still leave more to be desired, stick around for school bus racing, where you’ll see these massive yellow machines whisk around the track doing deft defying figure 8s. Hail to the bus driver indeed.
